What is an LVDT?
An LVDT (Linear Variable Differential Transformer) is an electromechanical sensor designed to accurately measure linear displacement or position.
An LVDT typically consists of a primary coil, two secondary coils and a movable ferromagnetic core. Movement of the core changes the electromagnetic coupling between the coils, producing an electrical signal corresponding to its position.
One of the principal advantages of LVDT technology is that there is no physical electrical contact between the moving core and the coil assembly. This contactless operation minimises wear and contributes to the excellent reliability, repeatability and long service life associated with LVDT sensors.
These characteristics make LVDTs particularly suitable for industrial applications where accurate measurements need to be taken repeatedly or continuously.
How does an LVDT work?
When the primary coil of an LVDT is energised, voltage is induced in the two secondary coils.
The position of the movable core determines the relationship between these voltages.
At the central or null position, the differential output is at or close to zero.
As the core moves in one direction, the voltage induced in one secondary coil increases relative to the other.
Moving the core in the opposite direction reverses this relationship.
The resulting differential signal can therefore be used to determine both the direction and magnitude of the displacement.
This allows an LVDT transducer to convert very small changes in physical position into an electrical signal that can be measured and processed by the associated monitoring or control system.
Why choose an LVDT for displacement measurement?
LVDTs have been used for precision measurement applications for many years because they combine measurement accuracy with robust operation.
Depending on the particular LVDT and application, benefits can include:
- High accuracy – suitable for applications requiring precise linear displacement measurements.
- Excellent repeatability – providing consistent measurements during repeated movements.
- Contactless operation – reducing mechanical wear within the sensing element.
- Long service life – making LVDTs suitable for continuous industrial applications.
- Reliable performance – appropriate sensor designs can be used in demanding operating environments.
- Wide range of applications – from general industrial measurement to specialist pressurised installations.
- Flexible installation options – different LVDT designs allow displacement to be measured where space or environmental conditions present additional challenges.
Where the position or movement of a component needs to be measured accurately and reliably, an LVDT can provide an effective long-term solution.
Industrial applications for LVDT sensors
LVDT displacement sensors are used across manufacturing, engineering, testing, automation and other specialist industries.
Typical applications include:
Manufacturing and quality control
LVDTs can be incorporated into production and inspection equipment to measure dimensions, movement and component position. Their accuracy and repeatability make them suitable for applications where small dimensional variations need to be identified.
Industrial automation
Within automated machinery, an LVDT can provide accurate position feedback for moving components, actuators and other mechanical systems.
Automotive testing
LVDT sensors can be used within test rigs and development environments for applications such as suspension analysis, component testing and measurement of mechanical movement.
Aerospace and engineering
Precision displacement measurement can be required during component testing, structural testing and the monitoring of mechanical systems.
Energy and power generation
LVDTs can be used for applications including valve position measurement, actuator monitoring and hydraulic equipment where accurate position feedback is required.
Hydraulic and pressurised systems
Specialist pressurised LVDTs allow linear displacement measurements to be taken in applications where the sensor needs to operate within a pressurised environment.
Monitran LVDT Sensors
Monitran supplies a choice of LVDT transducers for industrial displacement measurement, with options available for different operating environments and installation requirements.
Our LVDT range includes:
Industrial LVDTs
Our Industrial LVDT series provides robust displacement measurement for general industrial and engineering applications.
These LVDTs provide an effective solution where accurate and repeatable linear position measurement is required within machinery, testing equipment and other industrial systems.
Pressurised LVDTs
The Monitran Pressurised LVDT series has been developed for applications requiring displacement measurement within pressurised environments.
Their robust construction makes them suitable for specialist industrial applications where a conventional LVDT may not meet the environmental requirements.
Pressurised Slimline LVDTs
Where installation space is restricted, our Pressurised Slimline LVDT series provides a more compact solution while retaining the benefits of LVDT displacement measurement.
This makes the range particularly useful for specialist equipment where both environmental conditions and available space need to be considered.
Choosing the right LVDT
Selecting an LVDT involves more than simply choosing a measurement range.
The most appropriate sensor will depend on factors such as:
- Required displacement range
- Measurement accuracy
- Available installation space
- Operating temperature
- Environmental conditions
- Pressure requirements
- Mechanical configuration
- Signal and system requirements
Understanding these factors at the start of a project can help ensure that the LVDT selected provides reliable measurements throughout the life of the application.
If you are unsure which sensor is most appropriate, Monitran can help you review the requirements of your application and identify a suitable LVDT.
